And thechildren ofIsrael setforward, andpitched in theplains ofMoab on thissideJordan by Jericho.
AndBalak theson ofZipporsaw all thatIsrael haddone to the Amorites.
AndMoab wassoreafraidof thepeople, because they weremany: andMoab wasdistressed becauseof thechildren of Israel.
AndMoabsaid unto theelders ofMidian, Now shall thiscompany lickup all that are roundabout us, as theox lickethup thegrass of thefield. AndBalak theson ofZippor wasking of theMoabites at that time.
Hesentmessengers therefore untoBalaam theson ofBeor toPethor, which is by theriver of theland of thechildren of hispeople, tocall him, saying, Behold, there is apeople comeout fromEgypt: behold, theycover theface of theearth, and theyabide over against me:
Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me thispeople; for they are toomighty for me: peradventure I shallprevail, that we maysmite them, and that I may drive themout of theland: for Iwot that he whom thoublessest isblessed, and he whom thoucursest is cursed.
And theelders ofMoab and theelders ofMidiandeparted with the rewards ofdivination in theirhand; and theycame untoBalaam, andspake unto him thewords of Balak.
And hesaid unto them,Lodge here thisnight, and I willbring youwordagain, as theLORD shallspeak unto me: and theprinces ofMoababode with Balaam.
AndGodcame untoBalaam, andsaid, What men are these with thee?
Behold, there is apeople comeout ofEgypt, whichcovereth theface of theearth:come now, curse me them; peradventure I shall beable toovercome them, and drive them out.
AndGodsaid untoBalaam, Thou shalt notgo with them; thou shalt notcurse thepeople: for they are blessed.
AndBalaam roseup in themorning, andsaid unto theprinces ofBalak,Get you into yourland: for theLORDrefuseth to give meleave to go with you.
And theprinces ofMoab roseup, and theywent untoBalak, andsaid,Balaamrefuseth to come with us.
AndBalaksent yetagainprinces, more, and more honourable than they.
And theycame toBalaam, andsaid to him, ThussaithBalak theson ofZippor, Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me:
For I willpromote thee untoverygreathonour, and I willdo whatsoever thousayest unto me:come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.
AndBalaamanswered andsaid unto theservants ofBalak, IfBalak wouldgive me hishousefull ofsilver andgold, Icannot gobeyond theword of theLORD myGod, todoless or more.
Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here thisnight, that I mayknow what theLORD willsay unto me more.
AndGodcame untoBalaam atnight, andsaid unto him, If themencome tocall thee, riseup, andgo with them; butyet theword which I shallsay unto thee, that shalt thou do.
AndBalaam roseup in themorning, andsaddled hisass, andwent with theprinces of Moab.
AndGod'sanger waskindled because hewent: and theangel of theLORDstood in theway for anadversary against him. Now he wasriding upon hisass, and histwo servants were with him.
And theasssaw theangel of theLORDstanding in theway, and hissworddrawn in hishand: and theass turnedaside out of theway, andwent into thefield: andBalaamsmote theass, toturn her into the way.
But theangel of theLORDstood in apath of thevineyards, awall being on this side, and a wall on that side.
And when theasssaw theangel of theLORD, shethrust herself unto thewall, andcrushedBalaam'sfoot against thewall: and hesmote her again.
And theangel of theLORDwentfurther, andstood in anarrowplace, where was noway toturn either to the righthand or to the left.
And when theasssaw theangel of theLORD, she felldown underBalaam: andBalaam'sanger waskindled, and hesmote theass with a staff.
And theLORDopened themouth of theass, and shesaid untoBalaam, What have Idone unto thee, that thou hastsmitten me thesethree times?
AndBalaamsaid unto theass, Because thou hastmocked me: Iwould therewere asword in minehand, for now would I kill thee.
And theasssaid untoBalaam, Am not I thineass, upon which thou hastridden ever since I was thine unto thisday? was Ieverwont to doso unto thee? And he said, Nay.
Then theLORDopened theeyes ofBalaam, and hesaw theangel of theLORDstanding in theway, and hissworddrawn in hishand: and he boweddown his head, and fellflat on his face.
And theangel of theLORDsaid unto him, Wherefore hast thousmitten thineass thesethreetimes? behold, I wentout towithstand thee, because thyway is perverse before me:
And theasssaw me, andturned fromme thesethreetimes:unless she hadturned fromme, surely now also I hadslain thee, and saved her alive.
AndBalaamsaid unto theangel of theLORD, I havesinned; for Iknew not that thoustoodest in thewayagainst me: now therefore, if it displeasethee, I will get me back again.
And theangel of theLORDsaid untoBalaam,Go with themen: butonly theword that thou shalt speak. So Balaam went with the princes of Balak.
And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto a city of Moab, which is in the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost coast.
And Balak said unto Balaam, Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore camest thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honour?
And Balaam said unto Balak, Lo, I am come unto thee: have I now any power at all to say any thing? the word that God putteth in my mouth, that shall I speak.
And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjathhuzoth.
And Balak offered oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him.
And it came to pass on the morrow, that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into the high places of Baal, that thence he might see the utmost part of the people.
