Now thechildren ofReuben and thechildren ofGad had averygreatmultitude ofcattle: and when theysaw theland ofJazer, and theland ofGilead, that, behold, theplace was aplace for cattle;
2 Thechildren ofGad and thechildren ofReubencame andspake untoMoses, and toEleazar thepriest, and unto theprinces of thecongregation, saying,
3Ataroth, andDibon, andJazer, andNimrah, andHeshbon, andElealeh, andShebam, andNebo, and Beon,
4 Even thecountry which theLORDsmotebefore thecongregation ofIsrael, is aland forcattle, and thyservants have cattle:
5 Wherefore,said they, if we havefoundgrace in thysight, let thisland begiven unto thyservants for apossession, and bring us notover Jordan.
6 AndMosessaid unto thechildren ofGad and to thechildren ofReuben, Shall yourbrethrengo towar, and shall ye sit here?
7 And wherefore discourageye theheart of thechildren ofIsrael from goingover into theland which theLORD hath given them?
8 Thusdid yourfathers, when Isent them fromKadeshbarnea tosee the land.
9 For when they wentup unto thevalley ofEshcol, andsaw theland, theydiscouraged theheart of thechildren ofIsrael, that they should notgo into theland which theLORD had given them.
10 And theLORD'Sanger waskindled the sametime, and hesware, saying,
11Surely none of themen that cameup out ofEgypt, fromtwentyyearsold andupward, shallsee theland which Isware untoAbraham, untoIsaac, and untoJacob; because they have notwholly followed me:
12 SaveCaleb theson ofJephunneh theKenezite, andJoshua theson ofNun: for they havewhollyfollowed the LORD.
13 And theLORD'Sanger waskindled againstIsrael, and he made themwander in thewildernessfortyyears, until all thegeneration, that haddoneevil in thesight of theLORD, was consumed.
14 And, behold, ye are risenup in yourfathers' stead, anincrease ofsinfulmen, toaugment yet thefierceanger of theLORD toward Israel.
15 For if ye turnaway fromafter him, he will yetagainleave them in thewilderness; and ye shalldestroy all this people.
16 And they camenear unto him, andsaid, We willbuildsheepfolds here for ourcattle, andcities for our little ones:
17 But weourselves will goreadyarmedbefore thechildren ofIsrael, until we havebrought them unto theirplace: and our littleones shalldwell in thefencedcitiesbecause of theinhabitants of the land.
18 We will notreturn unto ourhouses, until thechildren ofIsrael haveinherited everyman his inheritance.
19 For we will notinherit with them on yondersideJordan, orforward; because ourinheritance isfallen to us on thissideJordan eastward.
20 AndMosessaid unto them, If ye willdo thisthing, if ye will goarmedbefore theLORD to war,
21 And willgo all of youarmedoverJordanbefore theLORD, until he hath drivenout hisenemies from before him,
22 And theland besubduedbefore theLORD: thenafterward ye shallreturn, and beguiltless before theLORD, and beforeIsrael; and thisland shall be yourpossessionbefore the LORD.
23 But if ye will not doso, behold, ye havesinned against theLORD: and besure yoursin will find you out.
24Build youcities for your littleones, andfolds for yoursheep; anddo that which hathproceeded out of your mouth.
25 And thechildren ofGad and thechildren ofReubenspake untoMoses,saying, Thyservants willdo as mylord commandeth.
26 Our littleones, ourwives, ourflocks, and all ourcattle, shall be there in thecities of Gilead:
27 But thyservants will passover, every manarmed forwar,before theLORD tobattle, as mylord saith.
28 So concerning themMosescommandedEleazar thepriest, andJoshua theson ofNun, and thechieffathers of thetribes of thechildren of Israel:
29 AndMosessaid unto them, If thechildren ofGad and thechildren ofReuben will pass with youoverJordan, every manarmed tobattle,before theLORD, and theland shall besubduedbefore you; then ye shallgive them theland ofGilead for a possession:
30 But if they will not passover with youarmed, they shall havepossessionsamong you in theland of Canaan.
31 And thechildren ofGad and thechildren ofReubenanswered,saying, As theLORD hathsaid unto thyservants, so will we do.
32 Wewill passoverarmedbefore theLORD into theland ofCanaan, that thepossession of ourinheritance on thisside Jordan may be ours.
33 AndMosesgave unto them, even to thechildren ofGad, and to thechildren ofReuben, and untohalf thetribe ofManasseh theson ofJoseph, thekingdom ofSihonking of theAmorites, and thekingdom ofOgking ofBashan, theland, with thecities thereof in thecoasts, even thecities of thecountry round about.
34 And thechildren ofGadbuiltDibon, andAtaroth, and Aroer,
35 And Atroth,Shophan, andJaazer, and Jogbehah,
36 AndBethnimrah, andBethharan,fencedcities: andfolds for sheep.
37 And thechildren ofReubenbuiltHeshbon, andElealeh, and Kirjathaim,
38 AndNebo, andBaalmeon, (theirnames beingchanged,) andShibmah: andgave othernames unto thecities which they builded.
39 And thechildren ofMachir theson ofManassehwent toGilead, andtook it, anddispossessed the Amorite which was in it.
40 AndMosesgaveGilead untoMachir theson ofManasseh; and he dwelt therein.
41 AndJair theson ofManassehwent andtook the smalltowns thereof, andcalled them Havothjair.
42 AndNobahwent andtookKenath, and thevillages thereof, andcalled itNobah, after his own name.
