[Maschil ofAsaph.] Giveear, O mypeople, to mylaw:incline yourears to thewords of my mouth.
2 I willopen mymouth in aparable: I willutter darksayings of old:
3 Which we haveheard andknown, and ourfathers have told us.
4 We will nothide them from theirchildren,shewing to thegeneration tocome thepraises of theLORD, and hisstrength, and his wonderfulworks that he hath done.
5 For heestablished atestimony inJacob, andappointed alaw inIsrael, which hecommanded ourfathers, that they should make themknown to their children:
6 That thegeneration tocome mightknow them, even thechildren which should beborn; who shouldarise anddeclare them to their children:
7 That they mightset theirhope inGod, and notforget theworks ofGod, butkeep his commandments:
8 And might not be as theirfathers, astubborn andrebelliousgeneration; ageneration thatset not theirheartaright, and whosespirit was notstedfast with God.
9 Thechildren ofEphraim, beingarmed, andcarryingbows, turnedback in theday of battle.
10 Theykept not thecovenant ofGod, andrefused towalk in his law;
11 Andforgat hisworks, and hiswonders that he had shewed them.
12 Marvellousthingsdid he in thesight of theirfathers, in theland ofEgypt, in thefield of Zoan.
13 Hedivided thesea, and caused them to passthrough; and he made thewaters tostand as an heap.
14 In thedaytime also heled them with acloud, and all thenight with alight of fire.
15 Heclave therocks in thewilderness, and gave themdrink as out of thegreat depths.
16 Hebroughtstreams also out of therock, and causedwaters to rundown like rivers.
17 And theysinned yetmore against him byprovoking the mostHigh in the wilderness.
18 And theytemptedGod in theirheart byaskingmeat for their lust.
19 Yea, theyspake againstGod; theysaid,CanGodfurnish atable in the wilderness?
20 Behold, hesmote therock, that thewaters gushedout, and thestreamsoverflowed;can hegivebread also?can heprovideflesh for his people?
21 Therefore theLORDheard this, and waswroth: so afire waskindled againstJacob, andanger also cameup against Israel;
22 Because theybelieved not inGod, andtrusted not in his salvation:
23 Though he hadcommanded theclouds fromabove, andopened thedoors of heaven,
24 And had raineddownmanna upon them toeat, and hadgiven them of thecorn of heaven.
25Man dideatangels'food: hesent themmeat to the full.
26 He caused an eastwind toblow in theheaven: and by hispower he broughtin the south wind.
27 Herainedflesh also upon them asdust, andfeatheredfowls like as thesand of the sea:
28 And he let itfall in themidst of theircamp, roundabout their habitations.
29 So they dideat, and werewellfilled: for hegave them their own desire;
30 They were notestranged from theirlust. But while theirmeat was yet in their mouths,
31 Thewrath ofGodcame upon them, andslew thefattest of them, and smotedown thechosen men of Israel.
32 For all this theysinned still, andbelieved not for his wondrous works.
33 Therefore theirdays did heconsume invanity, and theiryears in trouble.
34 When heslew them, then theysought him: and theyreturned and enquiredearly after God.
35 And theyremembered thatGod was theirrock, and thehighGod their redeemer.
36 Nevertheless they didflatter him with theirmouth, and theylied unto him with their tongues.
37 For theirheart was notright with him, neither were theystedfast in his covenant.
38 But he, being full ofcompassion,forgave theiriniquity, anddestroyed them not: yea, many atimeturned he hisangeraway, and did not stirup all his wrath.
39 For heremembered that they were butflesh; awind that passethaway, and cometh not again.
40How oft did theyprovoke him in thewilderness, andgrieve him in the desert!
41 Yea, they turnedback andtemptedGod, andlimited the HolyOne of Israel.
42 Theyremembered not hishand, nor theday when hedelivered them from the enemy.
43 How he hadwrought hissigns inEgypt, and hiswonders in thefield of Zoan:
44 And hadturned theirrivers intoblood; and theirfloods, that they could not drink.
45 Hesent divers sorts offlies among them, whichdevoured them; andfrogs, which destroyed them.
46 Hegave also theirincrease unto thecaterpiller, and theirlabour unto the locust.
47 Hedestroyed theirvines withhail, and their sycomoretrees with frost.
48 He gaveup theircattle also to thehail, and theirflocks to hot thunderbolts.
49 Hecast upon them thefierceness of hisanger,wrath, andindignation, andtrouble, bysendingevil angels among them.
50 Hemade away to hisanger; hespared not theirsoul fromdeath, butgave theirlifeover to the pestilence;
51 Andsmote all thefirstborn inEgypt; thechief of theirstrength in thetabernacles of Ham:
52 But made his ownpeople to goforth likesheep, andguided them in thewilderness like a flock.
53 And heled them onsafely, so that theyfeared not: but theseaoverwhelmed their enemies.
54 And hebrought them to theborder of hissanctuary, even to thismountain, which his righthand had purchased.
55 He castout theheathen alsobefore them, anddivided them aninheritance byline, and made thetribes ofIsrael todwell in their tents.
56 Yet theytempted andprovoked the mosthighGod, andkept not his testimonies:
57 But turnedback, and dealtunfaithfully like theirfathers: they were turnedaside like adeceitful bow.
58 For they provoked him toanger with their graven images.
59When God heard this, he was wroth, and greatly abhorred Israel:
60So that he forsook the tabernacle of Shiloh, the tent which he placed among men;
61And delivered his strength into captivity, and his glory into the enemy's hand.
62He gave his people over also unto the sword; and was wroth with his inheritance.
63The fire consumed their young men; and their maidens were not given to marriage.
64Their priests fell by the sword; and their widows made no lamentation.
65Then the Lord awaked as one out of sleep, and like a mighty man that shouteth by reason of wine.
66And he smote his enemies in the hinder parts: he put them to a perpetual reproach.
67Moreover he refused the tabernacle of Joseph, and chose not the tribe of Ephraim:
68But chose the tribe of Judah, the mount Zion which he loved.
69And he built his sanctuary like high palaces, like the earth which he hath established for ever.
70He chose David also his servant, and took him from the sheepfolds:
71From following the ewes great with young he brought him to feed Jacob his people, and Israel his inheritance.
72So he fed them according to the integrity of his heart; and guided them by the skilfulness of his hands.
